Let's be honest: mealtime can be a real struggle some days and if you have a picky eater (or two like we do) mealtime can be super frustrating for everyone at the table. Picky eaters often don't want to try what you've cooked for them and most times they'll say they don't like it before they even try it!
As parents we try every method we can think of to get our little ones to venture out of their food comfort zones. One method that helps is making new food look fun and exciting (check out our Picky Eaters board on Pinterest) and another method that works really well with our little ones is reading about it together and putting things in a new, kid-friendly perspective.
That's why we were really excited to receive an offer to review a brand new children's book called I Don't Like to Eat Ants written by JTK Belle and Illustrated by Sabine Mielke!
I Don't Like to Eat Ants tells the story of Anteater One and Anteater Two's debate over their current diet of ants. Anteater One doesn't like to eat ants and wants Anteater Two to try new foods, while Anteater Two believes it's their nature to only eat ants and nothing else.
Throughout the story, the colorful and imaginative illustrations created by Sabine Mielke attract young readers to follow along on Anteater One and Anteater Two's adventure to the Peanut Butter and Jelly Deli, where they discover that it's important to try new things - because you'll never know if you like something unless you're willing to give it a chance.
"I Don't Like to Eat Ants is meant to be read again and again, and enjoyed by parents and children alike," says author Jeffrey Belle, "It's charm and silliness attract the early readers but the moral is one parents know all too well and will appreciate."
About the Author:
While I Don't Like to Eat Ants teaches young children to branch out from the familiar, the heart of JTK Belle's ambition starts with family. Just like the anteater's loyal parade, JTK Belle consists of father Jeffrey Belle and his two children, Tommy and Katie.
In 2017, Jeffrey, Tommy and Katie Belle founded Picklefish Press so they could spread the joy their family has through their storytelling and share with parents the benefits reading has for children before bedtime. Some of their other books include, Freeda the Cheetah, Katherine's Bike was Wonderfully Strange, and Tommy O'Tom in a Tub O'Trouble.

What we loved about I Don't Like to Eat Ants:
The story is about two anteaters: one anteater who loves trying new foods and the other anteater who is really picky and doesn't want to eat anything different. In the beginning of the story you see the picky anteater missing out on all these new, delicious foods because he's hesitant to step out of his comfort zone - then finally, one day he decides to give something new a try and WOW! He quickly realizes that new foods are exciting (and delicious) and he now wants to try all kinds of new foods with his anteater friend.
The illustrations in I Don't Like to Eat Ants are whimsical and fun (we just love those cute anteaters and their colorful little shirts) and each page offers a fun surprise for readers when they see the silly expressions and comments of the ants hiding on each page.
As for the story, we just adore it! I Don't Like to Eat Ants is silly and wonderful and our kiddos just can't get enough of it! Every time we read this book our little guys are giggling and so engaged in the story. This book has really helped bring home the message of not being afraid to try new foods. Now our own young picky eaters are beginning to branch out and try new things at home!
I Don't Like to Eat Ants is such a fun book to read with our little ones - we have read it countless times since receiving our copy! We love that this book addresses picky eating in a fun and approachable way. If you have a little one who is struggling with trying new things at mealtime, we highly recommend I Don't Like to Eat Ants!
