Beyond Piggy Banks and Lemonade Stands: Helping Parents Teach Kids About Wise Money Decisions
No matter how tech savvy we are as parents, I think most of us have come to the realization that no matter how up-to-date we think we are, our kids are always more knowledgeable at the ins and outs of our cell phones and computers. It's a tough thing to admit, but it's true; I myself have frustratingly given my phone to my young child when I just can't figure out why it's not doing what it's supposed to -- and sure enough, a couple swipes and clicks later, he's fixed the problem. "Easy peasy, mom!" he says.
In this digital era, our kids are becoming increasingly skillful with technology. An article on TheGuardian.com says researchers recently did a study of 37,000 volunteers across 160 countries and found teenagers on average typed about 40wpm (words per minute) in comparison to people in their 40s and 50s who on average type much slower at 26-29wpm!
It's no doubt that our younger generation is more advanced when it comes to technology -- but the question is, are they prepared for all that life will throw their way when they leave the nest?
Sure, the average teenager will know everything they need to know academically to graduate high school and perhaps have even picked up some helpful skills to direct them into a career path when they start college. However, when it comes to the skills they'll need in order to handle their own finances, most are completely clueless.
In the new book, Beyond Piggy Banks and Lemonade Stands: How to Teach Young Kids About Finance (and They're Never Too Young) Certified Financial Planner Liz Frazier spells out the fundamentals of finance. We were recently given an advance copy of Beyond Piggy Banks and Lemonade Stands in exchange for our review (we will tell you our thoughts about this book in a bit!)
This easy-to-follow guide allows parents to teach their elementary-aged children the importance of saving, spending and everything in between! While the main goal is to teach children about the financial basics they will need to know as they enter young adulthood, it also provides fun bonding activities that parents & children can complete together (which makes it less of a homework assignment and more of a fun life tool.)
"This book provides parents with the confidence to teach simple financial basics to their children," says Frazier, "With that confidence comes excitement and inspiration, by teaching your children about finance you will influence every step of their lives in a positive and meaningful way."
Starting with the fundamental lessons such as needs versus wants, then moving into the "piggy bank basics" of spending, saving and sharing, parents can teach their children about not only saving money but making money through hard work - whether by doing age-appropriate jobs (dog walking, etc) or selling old toys at a garage sale, for example. These tools will help children build a strong financial foundation, which is so important because it will equip them with the knowledge they need to make sound financial decisions as they enter into adulthood.
Beyond Piggy Banks and Lemonade Stands also addresses other money basics and lessons such as:

What we loved about Beyond Piggy Banks and Lemonade Stands:
Firstly, from cover to cover this entire book was packed full of helpful information that really breaks down challenging topics into easier-to-understand and easier-to-communicate lessons that parents can share with their children.
Part I has Tips for the Already Overwhelmed Parent, which really brings home why teaching our younger generations financial responsibility is so important, how to communicate with your child about finance and even includes a fabulous Step-by-Step Guide to Age-Appropriate Information.
Part II covers the Beginner Level: Pre-K - First Grade, and thoroughly breaks down basic finance into simple, kid-friendly lessons. Each lesson is short which we think is fabulous because it made the lessons much less intimidating and much easier to communicate with our little ones. There are even hands-on activities to help make each lesson fun such as Play Archeologist with Coins, Grocery Store Guessing Game, Counting Coins, and a fun can-you-find-these-hidden-objects on dollars activity (which our kiddos thought was so fun!)
Part III is for the Intermediate Level: 1st - 5th Grade, and teaches important age-appropriate lessons on saving, sharing and spending (aka Piggy Bank Basics.) It covers topics such as Allowance, Fun Jobs for Kids, Smart Shopping, Charitable Activities for Kids and so much more. As in Part I, there are hands-on activities that you can do with your child that will help them further understand each lesson. We really appreciated the included Real-World Activity: Saving for a Goal where kids are encouraged to create their own savings goal on a big poster and keep track of how close they are to their goal as they continue to save their money. For example: In our home, our son chose to save for a new bike. We looked in store and online for the best deal and when he made his decision on the bike he wanted, we wrote down how much he needed to save in order to purchase that bike. Our son chose to save every bit of his allowance and even his birthday money for a whole year and when the day came that he finally reached his goal, he was so very proud to purchase his new bike. By making a real goal that he could actively choose to save toward, he learned an important lesson about impulse buying VS saving towards bigger & better things - and to this day his bike is his most prized possession!
Part IV is the Advanced Level: 2nd - 5th Grade and really dives in to even more important finance lessons such as Kiddie Economics, Banking and Investing, Interest, Stocks, Debt, Taxes and much more. There are fun hands-on activities which further helps kids (and parents) apply each lesson to their every-day lives. Every bit of Part IV is full of really helpful information that will equip kids with the tools they need to be financially responsible and aware adults and honestly we think even kids above 5th grade would benefit greatly from this!
It's no doubt that teaching financial responsibility to children is extremely important but admittedly, it can be difficult to communicate this topic in age-appropriate ways; Beyond Piggy Banks and Lemonade Stands took the difficulty away and helped us effectively teach our children (and ourselves in the process) important tools that they will use for the rest of their lives.
We love that this is not a read-once-and-you're-done book but it is a helpful tool which you can continually go back to and use as your children grow and begin to understand more and more. We think Beyond Piggy Banks and Lemonade Stands is a fantastic book and highly recommend it for all families!

The struggle of #momlife is real - but it doesn't have to be, thanks in part to the great advice, empowering challenges and helpful tools found in Lisa Canning's The Possibility Mom
Let's be honest: balancing the demands of motherhood is tough. Moms today juggle many things: kids, jobs, housework, family, friends, volunteering - the list goes on and on. Most often, trying to squeeze in some “me time” is challenging (sometimes it even seems impossible!)
No doubt about it, it's not easy being a mom. Yes, it is certainly the most rewarding job you'll ever have - but some days the struggle is real and no matter how hard you try, it feels like you haven't done enough or that you could have done better. Some days it feels like you just can't win.
But Lisa Canning, interior designer from HGTV’s “Buying and Selling with the Property Brothers,” lifestyle expert, author and mother of seven, believes differently. She believes what every mom needs to know is that success within motherhood, work and life is possible, and you get to define what that looks like.
Lisa understands the demands of modern motherhood well. During a recent interview with Florida Family Fun Travel, Lisa told us that she nearly lost her own family while pursuing career success, "For the first five years of my motherhood journey, work was my number one priority. In my head, I didn’t think that it was. But if you looked at all of my actions during this period, I was working all the time."
"Everything came to a crashing implosion one day in my minivan," she continued, "Just days out of the hospital with my fourth baby, I had convinced myself that it was so important to show up at a house that I was renovating for my interior design clients. As I looked around my minivan, with goldfish crackers crushed into the floor, take out containers from every chain known to man, sippy cups, water bottles, a bag bursting with supplies for a newborn, and another bag bursting with supplies for work, it dawned on me, finally that day, that my priorities were as messy as my minivan."
That was the day that everything changed for Lisa. She said no more. "That was the day that I became obsessed with the notion that a mom should be able to pursue her personal goals and dreams, but not at the expense of her health and her family," Lisa told us.
After re-prioritizing her life and defining her own version of success, Lisa Canning now coaches other moms on how to live their best lives. She details her journey and provides life changing tests and exercises to get women started on their own motherhood makeovers in her “mom bible,” The Possibility Mom: How to be a Great Mom and Pursue Your Dream at the Same Time.
Described as a book to provide support, encouragement, and a plan for a mom to design her most ideal life, The Possibility Mom: How to be a Great Mom and Pursue Your Dream at the Same Time is special because it is an honest look at the struggles of modern motherhood and gives real tried-and-true advice on how take control of your life and master the balancing act required of moms today.
"I wrote this book for moms like me," Lisa said, "moms who want to live life and live it to the fullest; moms who want to make an impact on their family and community; and moms who desire greatness, who dream big, and who want to do something meaningful with their lives but don't always know exactly how to achieve that."
The Possibility Mom is a "mom bible" for all moms: moms who feel stuck and discouraged, moms who want to quit their full-time jobs to be home with their kids and also moms who might be home full-time but want to pursue a career outside of the home.
During our interview, Lisa was very honest and open about how she struggled with her work-life balance for many years and now she wants to help other women learn through her mistakes, "For so many years, I dealt with the consequences of putting work first and defining success by trying to copy other people around me. Because of this, I hope the advice I offer comes across like you are speaking with a friend, like you are having coffee with someone who really understands your situation."
While there are many books out there on the market that offer advice for moms, Lisa Canning's The Possibility Mom: How to be a Great Mom and Pursue Your Dream at the Same Time is unique because it doesn't just stop at inspiration and encouragement - it offers moms everywhere a plan.
"There is no shortage of inspiration out there- there are a lot of places where you can find encouragement, and feel inspired to follow your dreams," Lisa adds, "But then how do you actually do it, when you get home, when you are changing diapers, when your husband doesn’t understand your dreams- that becomes more complicated when you are dealing with your real life reality. Sometimes no amount of cheerleading can get you through a tough situation. So I hope this book is a nice compliment to some of the inspirational and motivational resources that are out there. I hope this book gives moms who feel trapped a plan to chart a new course."
While changing how we view ourselves, how we deal with life's challenges and re-prioritizing what matters the most is admittedly not an easy task, it can be done. I admit it would be wonderful if we could take control to better our lives by just magically snapping our fingers, but the best change comes with dedication, time and patience.
Lisa agrees that it's important to be patient with yourself, “Giving birth to anything new—whether birthing a biological child, adding a child by adoption, starting a new business, leaving a comfortable job, quitting a bad habit, or finally saying no to people who take advantage of you—is full of uncertainty. We don’t have a clear picture of what our life will look like on the other side. But when we push through the pain and uncertainty, the fear of failure and risk of rejection, incredible things can happen.”

What We Loved About The Possibility Mom: How to be a Great Mom and Pursue Your Dream at the Same Time by Lisa Canning:
I absolutely LOVED Lisa Canning's The Possibility Mom! I admittedly am an always-on-the-go-mom who is doing my best to balance kids, work, family time, volunteering, church, housework, friends (the list goes on and on) and like most moms, I often suffer from "mom guilt" because balancing everything day-to-day is tough.
I found The Possibility Mom to be a very approachable, honest and realistic look at the struggles of modern motherhood and I loved how every chapter offered a challenge. The challenges and tools given in this book really helped me understand issues that I hadn't realized I was giving myself and come up with a plan on how to refocus those things in a healthier way.
I especially appreciated Chapter 3: Believing Change is Possible. In chapter 3, Lisa identifies four common "Limiting Beliefs" every mom has, how to honestly look at the limits you may be giving yourself and how to reframe them. I admit I have had many Limiting Beliefs in my own life; and reading this chapter really helped me realize that I was the one limiting myself. It helped me to come up with a plan on how to healthily pursue my dreams, still be a good mom & do it all without the "mom guilt."
Although I loved the entire book cover-to-cover, I also found Chapter 7: Making This Work: The Importance of Your Schedule extremely helpful. To quote a line on page 77 of The Possibility Mom, "Saying no is hard but necessary if you wish to make room for the things that matter most." I really loved how this chapter clearly & simply broke down so many issues that make a moms day-to-day life too busy; I found it helped me sort out my own priorities and helped me manage my time better - which benefits not only myself (hello less stress!) but it benefits my whole family too.
I really loved Lisa Canning's The Possibility Mom: How to be a Great Mom and Pursue Your Dream at the Same Time and I found it to be an extremely helpful and empowering tool for modern moms everywhere.

I remember walking down the seemingly endless aisles of parental advice books when I was pregnant with my first child. My head swimming, I purchased a huge stack of books in hope that at least one of them would give me the answers I knew I would need after my baby arrived.
When my baby was born a few months later, I had plenty of advice for all the newborn stuff – and thanks to the help of my family, friends and countless hours of reading, I did a pretty good job as a first-time mom...
And then in the blink of an eye, my tiny little baby grew into a kid.
So what happens after the baby phase is over? What happens when your little one is in that “middle stage” where they are beginning to explore their own independence yet still require so much of your time and attention? When they start to spread their little wings and begin kindergarten, when they become a big brother/big sister, when they have endless questions and big, scary feelings that they need help sorting through?
Early Childhood educator & preschool owner Christine Kyriakakos Martin has spent over 40 years helping parents with the every-day challenges they face raising their young children. As a mother herself, she understands how amazing yet hard parenting can be - which is why she decided to write a book giving parents everywhere her practical tips & advice so they can help their children feel calm, secure and confident no matter what challenges arise each day!
In You've Got This! Keys to Effective Parenting for the Early Years, Christine Kyriakakos Martin gives advice on some of the most pressing issues and questions brought up by parents during her 40+ years in early childhood education. In each topic of the book, parents are given practical tips, ways to apply the information within their own home, and encouraging quotes from individuals from a multitude of backgrounds such as teachers, education specialists, parents, grandparents and successful professionals.
As Christine Kyriakakos Martin says in the book, "I know you can do this! Use the tools in this book to take a ride through the beautiful journey parenting can be. It's a ride that you take with the best possible passengers...your children."
